New Breakthrough Has Been Made In The Research Of High-strength Porous Titanium Alloy Artificial Bone Materials

Recently, the research and development of the high-strength tough porous titanium artificial bone material (2015AA033702), undertaken by the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences and other units, passed the technical acceptance. The high-strength porous titanium alloy artificial bone material developed in this project provides a new approach for future clinical treatment of large-area bone defect repair.


 Bone defect is a common disease in orthopedics and maxillofacial surgery. It is caused by trauma, infection, tumor resection, etc. Repair of large-area bone defect is a difficult problem in clinical treatment. The subject has broken through the structural design and precise preparation of new high-strength and tough porous titanium alloys, combined with the GR5 electron beam additive manufacturing technology of titanium alloys, in-situ prepared surface treatment technology of barium titanate piezoelectric ceramics, and in vitro ultrasonic clinical treatment technologies. The porous titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V artificial bone material was developed to meet the requirements of bone tissue repair.

At present, the porous titanium alloy TC4 bars/rods 、plates/sheets artificial bone material developed by the subject has passed the biocompatibility test; the porous structure orthopedic products such as the interbody fusion cage and the femoral head support rod have been evaluated in animal experiments, which is obviously compared with the control group. The repair efficiency of the defected bone tissue was improved (≥20%); the acetabular cup and the porous interbody fusion cage with the surface structure of the trabecular bone were passed the registration test of the State Food and Drug Administration and entered the clinical trial study.

 

    Bone repair biomaterials are the focus of research in biomedical materials. The successful development of new high-strength and tough porous medical titanium alloy artificial bone repair materials has laid a solid foundation for the development of bone repair biomaterials and related equipment industries with independent intellectual property rights in China.
