The First Clinical Application Of Titanium Alloy Femoral Head Support Rods
Aug 01, 2018

The reporter learned from the Xijing Hospital of the Air Force Military Medical University on July 19 that recently, the team led by Professor Guo Zheng of the Department of Orthopaedics of the hospital successfully implanted a titanium alloy support rod with a gradient of human bone structure into a patient with bone necrosis, effectively improving Patient joint function. It is reported that the clinical treatment of femoral head necrosis with a gradient-like human bone structure support rod is the first in the world, providing a new solution for the treatment of femoral head necrosis.

Li, a 42-year-old patient from Yulin City, suffered from left hip pain six months ago. His pain was significantly aggravated when he was squatting or tired, but he had not been treated with specific treatment, which made walking difficult. After going to Xijing Hospital, the condition was diagnosed as bilateral femoral head necrosis with a large area of necrosis. After the expert team consultation, it was decided that the innovative way was to implant the titanium-like femoral head support rodof the human bone structure. Preoperatively, 3D printed a titanium-like femoral head support rod that resembles a human bone structure. The operation was performed by Professor Fan Hongbin from the Department of Orthopaedics of Xijing Hospital. In addition to the titanium alloy support rod, artificial bone containing bone marrow stromal cells was implanted as a filling. On the day of surgery, the pain symptoms around the hip joints were significantly relieved, and the joint function recovered well after one week.

Femoral head necrosis is one of the common and refractory chronic diseases in orthopedics. The titanium alloy support rod developed by Professor Guo Zheng's team is innovative in the use of gradient-like human bone structure and central piping design. The gradient-like human bone structure design can replace or share the weight-bearing function of the femoral head, so that the patient can avoid the collapse of the femoral head under normal walking conditions, which is beneficial to the growth of the bone tissue and tightly combined with the surrounding bone to increase the mechanical properties. The central tube design can be used as a channel to maintain core decompression, or as a channel for injecting artificial bone or other osteoinductive active substances, so that the injected artificial bone or osteoinductive drug is concentrated in the necrotic area of the femoral head, and promotes new bone formation. Repair the necrotic area.

It is reported that the 3D printed human bone titanium alloy femoral head support rod has won the national invention patent and is expected to benefit more patients with femoral head necrosis in the near future. At present, Professor Guo Zheng's team has developed more than 10 support rods of different configurations and different materials.
